Worldwide the problems of deteriorating substandard structures, which cannot easily be inspected, provide a major challenge to the engineering profession and to Governments who must resource the work required. If this work is to be done effectively, research is needed to develop best practice for structural engineers in three areas: 1. Finding hidden defects from design, construction and deterioration. 2. Quantifying structural effects of deterioration. 3. Defining the limits of acceptable deterioration.
