Victoria University's new high-rise student accommodation buildings in Wellington, New Zealand, completed in January 2009, provide much-needed student accommodation. The site location on a steep slope and the need to construct 348 dormitories in a condensed 18 month programme would in themselves have posed some technical and logistical challenges. To add to the challenge, the location of the buildings was only 2km from a major seismic fault line and the need for careful consideration of seismic issues was heightened by the buildings' secondary role as the university's disaster operations centre.
