Revised framework for contaminated land

The Environment Agency (EA) has recently issued a revised framework for the assessment of human health risks, the trigger for remediation at many development sites.rnIn issuing this revised framework, it has withdrawn the existing Guideline Values for soil contamination (the SGVs). A small number of replacement SGVs have been issued but much fewer than those withdrawn, so that designers must now generate a greater number of Generic Assessment Criteria (GACs) to allow site assessment. This is a complex process and in the absence of centrally issued SGVs consultants will have to turn to a few specialist suppliers of GACs if they cannot invest the significant resources into generating their own.
