Engineering: turning ideas into reality

The House of Commons Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Committee has published its report on engineering following a year-long inquiry. Engineering: turning ideas into reality highlights the importance of engineering to a resilient economy just as there is widespread recognition that engineering innovation will be the key to lifting the country out of recession. The Committee recognised the 'enormous scope and breadth of engineering' and its critical importance 'to the economy and societal well-being, and the decisive role it must play in tacking global challenges such as climate change, water and food supply, and energy security'. Engineering is seen as the key to recovery: 'The recent economic crisis has presented the Government with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to restructure the Economy by building on the existing substantial strength of UK engineering'.
