Joel Blackwell, Secretary, Academic Qualifications Panel, discusses the issues and outlines the options for candidates for Chartered and Associate-MembershiprnThe issue of academic qualifications, and the minimum academic standards required for various grades of membership is a complicated one. There have, over the last 10 years, been a number of changes which can confuse applicants and which have led to an increase in the number of those required to undertake a period of further learning to meet the academic requirements for their chosen grade.rnIn determining a person's eligibility to progress to either Chartered or Associate-Membership, candidates will need to confirm the minimum academic standard required for their chosen grade.As it currently stands, candidates who wish to progress to Chartered membership must hold an Institution accredited MEng degree (normally 4 years full time) or the equivalent, whilst candidates who wish to progress to Associate-Membership must hold an Institution accredited 3 year Eng degree e.g. BSc, BEng (ordinary) or the equivalent. Candidates who do not automatically hold the exemplifying qualifications for their chosen grade of membership may have to have an academic assessment where their qualifications will be assessed against the required standard on an individual basis.
