Managing skills in the recession

A survey reveals that competence of managers working in the construction industry lags behind UK averages for all industrial sectors by about 10% nationally. This could critically impact on the ability of the industry to benefit from any upturn in the economy.rnThe Metricate 2009 study of 280 managers in the sector found deficiencies in the following areas of competency, where 100% represents 'most competent': thinking clearly and analytically (31 %); listening and organising (36%); setting goals and standards (40%) and appraising people and performance (42%).rnMetricate's analysis was by interactive multimedia assessment to measure 12 manager competencies, using the MAP (Managerial Assessment of Proficiency). A total of 11 279 assessments of management competencies across all industrial sectors in the UK was undertaken, of which 280 were of managers in the construction sector.
