Assessing earthquake damage in Haiti

Haiti was struck by a 7.2Mw earthquake at 16.53 on 12 January 2010 along the EPG (Enriquillo-Plantain Garden) fault zone. It killed 230 000 people and injured 2M. The very high number of casualties constrasted strongly with the 8.8Mw earthquake in Chile on 27 February, which killed around 700 people. EEFIT has visited both places and will thus be able to point up the reasons for the differences.rnEEFIT reported on the team's visit to Haiti at a meeting at the Institution's hq on 11 May, which was innovative in several ways. Consultant structural engineer Edmund Booth explained that there was much more advance preparation because of the heightened dangers of the visit, assessing risk and the effects of extreme weather, and special training on security from RedR.
