The 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti on January 12 may have killed 200 000 people and destroyed essential public buildings - schools, hospitals and government ministries, shanty towns built on slopes and whole neigbourhoods. It revealed a lack of building standards and poor construction of new as well as older structures.rnHumanitarian charity, RedR, which places engineers, amongst others, in disaster areas and provides training, was mobilised quickly, raising £80 000 within a week to send out a needs assessment team with partner Bioforce. A local training programme costing at least £200 000 will be set up focusing on technical training in water and sanitation, shelter, logistics and disaster awareness. It will also provide security training for local and international aid personnel. RedR is also mobilised its register of Members for deployment, if needed, and is recruiting 23 posts related to the Haiti earthquake.
