The Institution's China Awards aim to promote excellence in structural engineering demonstrated through the design and construction of landmark structures in China. The 2009 Awards took place on Monday 14 December 2009 in Beijing. The winners and commendations are as follows:rnThe main stadium of the 2008 Beijing Olympics is instantly recognisable throughout the world. However, the interpretation of its architectural complexity required truly outstanding structural engineering for its execution. A wide range of challenging design issues had to be successfully and quickly resolved by the effective use of research, innovation and new engineering technology. The outcome is a truly iconic and memorable stadium.
