Steel Award goes to Finnish factory

WSP Finland has received the 2009 Finnish Steel Construction of the Year Award for the design of steel structures for the new coffee roastery of Gustav Paulig Ltd. The judges found the building complex an excellent example of the architectural heritage of Finnish industrial buildings.rnPaulig's new premises comprise the actual roastery and an office building. The roastery illustrates how steel construction can improve the architectural appearance of industrial buildings. The site's location close to the sea meant several challenges at the detail level, such as the solutions employed for the steel fagades and the eaves structures.rnIn addition to structural design, WSP Finland was responsible for foundation engineering, traffic planning, and infrastructure design for the Paulig roastery. The 2009 award is the third steel construction award for structural design awarded to WSP by the Finnish Constructional Steelwork Association. The other award-winning constructionsrnare the Parliament Annex and the Saame bridge in Utsjoki.rnThe Finnish Constructional Steelwork Association granted the award to Oy Gustav Paulig Ab, client, Arkkitehdit Tommila Oy, architectural designer, WSP Finland Oy, structural designer, Lemcon Oy, project management contractor, Pektra Oy frame contractor, and Eristysliike Ahola Oy and Oulun Kuorirakenne Oy fagade contractors.
