Updated guidance published on hardcore use

BRE has issued updated guidance for engineers and builders on selecting and placing material for use as hardcore in building construction. The new two-part Digest reviews materials currently being promoted for use as a sustainable option, deals with placing and compacting hardcore material and reviews legacy issues resulting from the use of unsuitable material as hardcore. 'Hardcore' is the construction term for engineered infill material used to support ground floor slabs of low-rise buildings. The hardcore should meet certain requirements to ensure that it is physically stable and chemically inert. However, some of the materials and placing procedures used in the past have not met these requirements and there has been consequent damage to buildings.
