When I started work I was instructed not to specify vibrating rollers as these caused complaints from adjacent householders. As a result specifications that we prepared prohibited the use of vibrating rollers in built up areas. I thought this was well known until the other day I was at home when suddenly the whole house started shaking. I immediately thought that a very large piece of plant was being positioned on an adjacent building site. I went to the window and looked out, but there were no large items of plant or equipment on site. However, closer inspection revealed a small vibrating roller being used to compact some asphalt. Engineers should note that this type of roller sets up a vibration wave that can affect building structures some distance from the roller.
