Large seismic events can change our world through damage, cause huge loss of human life and cripple economies. In this report the author explores new innovations in research and technology to minimise earthquake damage and reduce the financial risk associated with natural disasters. A new low damage seismic design philosophy challenges the current approaches to address multiple performance objectives including life safety and damage control regardless of building location. Global trends toward urbanisation of large cities will continue to see larger populations residing in built up areas, placing millions of people at risk from seismic events. So the choices of built form and its seismic resilience have far-reaching consequences, with some 380 major cities located within striking distance of some of the world's most active fault lines.
