Locked horns over the Party Wall

A regular correspondent, Simon Pole from Wimbledon, has sent us the following letter expressing his concerns regarding the impact that the Party Wall Act 2004 has on the respectiv building owners'properties. He quotes some examples of commonly encountered problems associated with works undertaken In the proximity of party walls which are no doubt familiar to many of our members. I would like to raise the general topic of party walls and ask other engineers how they deal with such matters when specifically dealing with the building owner's property. I have in mind, a typical central London mid-terraced property built in Victorian times by example.
