Alan's points are very valid and I did indeed note, in an initial draft of my paper, that the demise of prestressing occurred at the same time as improvements in the fabrication and erection of steel plate girders. Benaim was famous for creating alternative designs for contractors and we prepared dozens of such schemes in the UK from 1982 onwards - the majority of which were against poorly-designed concrete schemes. We also prepared a significant number of steel-composite alternative designs though, as we were never purely promoting concrete, but always seeking to obtain the best solution for our particular contractor client at that particular site.
