Steel frames are typically lightweight, so it might be expected that second-order effects can be significant and need to be allowed for. The use of software which will allow for these effects is one convenient approach. For straightforward frames, the Eurocode contains a simple method to assess the significance of second-order effects and how to allow for them if necessary.
