Geoff Collett (July 2016) bemoans a perceived "tick-box" nature of modern engineering design practice. Such complaints are not new, and readers may be interested in T.Y. Lin's epigraph for his famous Design of Prestressed Concrete Structures (1955), which states: "To engineers who, rather than blindly follow codes of practice, seek to apply the laws of nature". Clearly, even in 1955, T.Y. Lin had the same concern.
