Mortars made with lime and without OPC are the most commonly used for conservation, restoration and intervention in historic masonry. The materials for these mixes are chosen according to their use and most frequently comprise those made from bagged NHL, bagged pure or air limes, and lime putties procured in drums. The sand used in restoration is graded coarser than with new brickwork, with a maximum particle size typically between 4-5mm. Mortar mix proportions between 1:2.5 and 1:2 of lime to sand by volume are common.
