Power stations, bridges and skyscrapers: forgotten figures in structural engineering history

The two parts of this paper cover the careers of seven women, with Figure 1 highlighting the periods in which they were active in structural engineering. The green markers indicate memberships of engineering institutions and the hatched band indicates work in technical publishing. In Part 1, Nina Baker provided an overview of some of the better-known women engineers of this period1. Part 2 now looks in more detail at the careers of Florence Taylor and Mary Irvine -two candidates for 'first woman' of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
