THIS MONTH'S ISSUE encompasses a broad historical sweep, from the first steps taken by women into the world of civil engineering in the mid-19th century, to the rapid technological changes that are upending the design process today. We start by looking back, with historian Nina Baker examining some pioneering female figures of the 19th and early 20th centuries whose stories are generally not well known, and who forged their careers at a time when there was often deep-set resistance to women in the engineering professions - not least from the professional institutions (page 8). Nina's account is the first of two articles adapted from this year's James Sutherland History Lecture. Fiona Cobb will continue the story next month by putting two pioneering women of the IStructE under the spotlight.
