Business-to-business collaboration: an introduction to ISO 44001

People collaborate whenever they work together towards common objectives. In low-risk circumstances, the relationship is usually informal; but in high-risk commercial environments (e.g. engagement of specialist consultant by large consultant, or joint venture between consultant and contractor), it is essential to confirm the agreement in writing. BS ISO 44001:20171 provides an accredited means for businesses to do this by adapting their internal governance procedures to include management of a collaborative business relationship (CBR) (Table 1). This Business Practice Note outlines the activities involved in each of the eight stages used by BS ISO 44001 to break down the lifecycle of a CBR. Its purpose is to introduce the reader to the requirements of the standard and to help them plan for future collaborations.
