This Business Practice Note is intended to give an overview of responsibilities and legal obligations with regards to employment and support of employees who take a career break - primarily as a result of maternity or paternity. It will also look at some of the professional and business benefits of being a modern, inclusive employer, supporting families. The article discusses UK laws and statutory benefits at the time of writing, but the guidance presented should not be considered exhaustive. In addition, if outside the UK, reference should be made to the law in the relevant jurisdiction.
