The chapter explored a great deal of topics, ranging from doomsday scenarios both traditional and contemporary (war, disease, hostile artificial intelligence, scientific accidents, and so on) to the future of human survival through transhuman methods (such as eugenics or cybernetics) or extraterrestrial colonisation. Many topics were covered in this chapter, and as such some treatments were cursory even by the standards of an introductory text, but this was ameliorated by the fact that this was an intentionally speculative chapter, and by the presence of a comprehensive guide to further reading at the end of the book.
