In his Preface, Armstrong recalls that immediately after the Second World War the philosophy departments in major English speaking universities had all but abandoned metaphysics in favor of linguistic analysis. Ayer, in his Language, Truth and Logic, popularized the movement, and at one time every graduate student of philosophy in North America was likely to own a paperback copy of that book.
