Law enforcement leadership comes from working with the community and obtaining continuous professional and personal development. If there is a strong community-police relationship, the community knows that their officers are leaders due to the established trust and legitimacy that allows the officers to better serve. Leadership is displayed at every call for service and every community-police interaction. Citizens look to their police officers to lead when they're in a vulnerable situation. The mission of the IACP is to serve the leaders of today and develop the leaders of tomorrow. Leadership often focuses on developing processes and not people, but if police executives focus on identifying young talent in their organizations, they will ultimately enhance their organizations. The development of emerging leaders is essential to the future of law enforcement. Every leader has a responsibility to develop others and to remain steadfast in their protection of a future that will go beyond their years of service, which will be their legacy.
