Within WVP, whilst glass making experience has been consistently good, early operational experience showed that the severe in-cell operating environment was causing high unreliability in several key items of in-cell equipment. This was restricting overall glass container production to an unacceptable level. Subsequent improvements to in-cell equipment, notably cranes and MSMs have alleviated many of the earlier problems, reduced downtime dramatically and, hence, container throughput has increased significantly (Fig. 6). Further improvements underway to improve the handling of technological waste through the Breakdown Cells increase the confidence that improved throughput can be sustained.
