Reducing Alarm Activity at Sizewell B Power Station

This paper discusses the Alarm Optimisation Project at Sizewell B PWR Power Station. It shows how a structured approach by a multi-disciplined team, coupled with innovative techniques in data analysis, has allowed considerable progress to be gained in the battle for control of alarm traffic. A number of specific examples show how benefit has been taken from a period of early operating experience and that use is being made of software modifications, plant modifications and changes to operating practices in order to engineer alarm reductions whilst still providing adequate alarm information to operating staff.
