Recycled Uranium-a new fuel for CANDU Reactors

Within the next few years, following the conclusion of irradiation trials and licensing studies, it is anticipated that CANFLEX RU bundles will be introduced into a commercial reactor for a demonstration irradiation programme and then followed by full core implementation. RU will be available at a price that is significantly lower than the equivalent non-irradiated enriched uranium produced by traditional enrichment routes. Overall, the introduction of RU fuel into CANDU reactors has beneficial environmental impacts on fuel cycle operations. The mining of fresh uranium is displaced by uranium recycle for additional electricity production thereby conserving natural resources for future use.
