Traditionally, the Arctic region is within the sphere of Russian interests. According to experts the Russian continental shelf contains about a quarter of the world's offshore hydrocarbon reserves Arctic and Sub-Arctic areas are characterised by severe environmental conditions - ice cover, low temperatures, polar nights and lack of extended infrastructure. The recent years have shown a tendency of geophysical activities growth with intensive operations in the Barents and Kara Seas together with growth of the world seismic vessel fleet. Seismic acquisition activities are carried out offshore Canada, Greenland and Alaska.
