Ndependent research has shown that the presence of safety representatives within an airline can cut the accident rate by up to 50%. However, to have this effect, we first need to ensure that our safety representatives are fully prepared. Legal Rights and Duties of Safety Representatives BALPA, as a Trade Union, has the legal right to appoint health and safety representatives in airlines where it has members. The law leaves it to BALPA, in consultation with the employer, to decide how many representatives are needed. However, once a safety representative has been appointed, the law gives them significant rights.
