Because of its size, complexity and volatile environment, the aviation system is vulnerable to practical drift. Sociologists and psychologists have noted the tendency of complex socio-technical systems (like the offshore oil and gas industry, onshore process industry or commercial aviation) to drift, or migrate, towards the edges of the safety envelope -despite regulators' best efforts.
