Laurie was born 80 years ago into a very poor family in Old Portsmouth. His education and home life were fragmented and just before the start of the Second World War, at the age of nine, he became an evacuee. He stayed with over 16 families in the Salisbury area and did not return home until just before the end of the war. He then went on to the Royal Dockyard School in Portsmouth and won a scholarship to university, but this had to be deferred because of national service.
