It is certainly not just aviation workers - of which there are many thousands including pilots in my Crawley constituency -who have contacted me recently about air passenger duty. I received more e-mails from the'A Fair Tax on Flying'campaign than any other MP and than on any other issue. Many of those e-mails have been from hard-working, local families and local businesses that are affected by the astonishingly high level of APD they now face. Many people will be aware that we already pay around eight and a half times the rates of APD than the European average and only four other countries charge APD in Europe; Germany is reducing its APD and the Netherlands abandoned this form of tax altogether as it was costing its economy far more than it was raising.
