I probably would never have heard of Sir Michael Beetham, except that I was advised by a friend to commit the name to memory as he became Chief of the Air Staff just before I joined the RAF in 1977-his name on the book jacket therefore caught my eye. Beetham certainly served 'in interesting times'. He joined the RAF in 1941 and did his basic flying training in Canada, flying trainers unfamiliar to me: BT-13 Valiant, AT-g Fledgling and AT-17.
