NAVIGATING THE FUTURE

Icao states have agreed to implement the required navigational performance approach procedures (RNP APCH) described in the performance based navigation (PBN) manual Doc 9613. They further agreed that localiser performance with vertical guidance (LPV) approaches should be introduced at all major airports by 2016 and that NDB approaches will be phased out by 2020. Recent AICs in the UK have stated that all ATC routing is to be by area navigation (RNAV) and that from 2014 holds are to be based on RNAV fixes. It is therefore to be expected that PBN, RNAV and LPV approaches will become more generally introduced.
