Starting his flying career in the Fleet Air Arm, he was devastated to be failed in the advanced stages of his training on the Hawker Hunter. He joined BOAC as a second officer on the 707 fleet in 1970 which led to the opportunity to apply for stand-down when the position of flight navigator disappeared with the advent of INS in 1976.
