Guess how many UK registered aircraft declared a mayday or pan because of a fuel emergency from January 2012 to May this year (29 months)? Ten? Twenty? Surely not 50! The answer, provided by a Freedom of Information Request, is 85. This figure includes 19 maydays and 66 pans. There were 29 other fuel events of various sorts including low fuel temperature, landing below reserve and low fuel indications, many of which, when you read the narrative, might have justified at least a pan. The Mandatory Occurrence Report narrative sections are not recommended bedtime reading if you want a good night's sleep. Even sitting here in the safety of the Rocking Chair reading those MORs, the palms went a little clammy.
