LEDs for Streets: a Case Not Yet Proven

In contrast to the seeming avalanche of enthusiasm for LED street lighting, Dave Franks, Public Lighting Service Development Manager at Westminster City Council, introduces a note of caution. This is an edited version of a paper given during the LuxLive seminars in November 2012 As a member of the London Lighting Engineers Group (LoLEG) group, I have been asked to provide some feedback on various London LED trials being carried out in the London Borough of Camden, the London Borough of Southwark, Transport for London (TfL) and Westminster City Council. Some of these trials have not yet been fully assessed. For example, TfL, as part of its effort to reduce its carbon footprint, is currently undertaking some controlled LED trials on London's strategic road network -notably parts of the A40 Western Avenue.
