RELIGHTING OF HIGH STREET, PORLOCK

Porlock is a small village on the northern edges of the Exmoor National Park which, of course, is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The High Street in Porlock is the A39 road which serves the area of West Somerset and North Devon. In June 1991 plans were received from SWEB and British Telecom indicating that under amenity works they were intending to remove all the overhead systems in the area and place them underground. Since the supporting poles, which had street lighting units attached to some of them, were to be removed, it would be necessary to consider alternative supports. The old lighting consisted of 80W high pressure mercury lanterns of very early vintage.
