The fully completed N8 Cashel-Mitchelstown road was opened last July approximately ten months early. John Norbury, Project Resident Engineer for the scheme, reports on delivering it on an innovative Early Contractor Involvement basis. The N8 Cashel-Mitchelstown Scheme forms part of the Transport 21 strategy to link Dublin to all the major urban centres via motorway or high quality dual carriageways by 2010. From the south end of the N8 Cashel Bypass, the dual two-lane road, designed to motorway standards, heads south-west for about 12km before swinging west along the southern flanks of the Galtee Mountains to a connection west of the village of Kilbeheny with the N8 Fermoy-Mitchelstown Scheme, construction of which commenced in late 2007.There are four interchanges, one at each end of the scheme and two intermediate interchanges. From the Cloghabreedy interchange a 3.3km length of 2+1 road provides a link to the N24 Cahir-Clonmel road. This short length of 2+1 provides a bypass of Cahir for N24 traffic and is part of a longer term scheme to upgrade the whole of the N24 Waterford-Limerick road.
