A ROAD MAP FOR SMART NETWORKS

Electricity networks are complex and expensive to build. It is estimated that the European transmission and distribution (T and D) system, has over 230,000km of transmission lines (220kV or above) and five million km of distribution lines. The investment value in these networks exceeds €600bn with another €500bn of investment required over the next 20 years. Very similar figures apply to the US. In Ireland, we have close on 200,000km of T and D networks, almost four times per capita the European average because of our dispersed population, and investment in the period 2001 -2010 will exceed 6bn.
