Memories of the Seventies Decade sets new agenda for profession

On becoming President of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland (IEI) in 1974, Finbar Callanan revived the annual conference, which had fallen into abeyance, and the 'Crossroads' Conference was held in Trinity College Dublin in October of that year. Additionally, the Council agreed to the establishment of a Conference of Engineer ing Education, drawn from employers and academics, to act as a 'think tank' with regard to current and future directions for the IEI. This development was coupled with visits to the various engineer ing schools with the objective of strengthening ties between the colleges and the profession. Close ties were also established with the National Council for Educational Awards (NCEA) in relation to technician education, a body with which Lucas Collins had been closely involved on behalf of the IEI.
