CIBSE Ireland introduced the engineering research competition, the Irish Lighter in 2009. Working engineers and postgraduate researchers are invited to submit one-page abstracts of interesting and innovative projects or research for peer review. A short list is selected and these applicants submit 3000-word papers to an expert judging panel of peers in the industry. The competition aims to encourage evidence-based research and evaluation of innovative projects. It was intended to encourage a move from ideologically-based ideas and innovations towards proven value, underpinned by convincing evidence. CIBSE requested DIT through the School of Electrical Engineering Systems to organise the competition on its behalf and sponsorship has been provided by Enlighten.
