New facility promises waste-toenergy advantages for north east

The central function of the Indaver facility is to recover the energy value from residual municipal waste that remains after waste prevention, reuse and recycling. The Meath facility is designed to service primarily the north east waste management region (covering Meath, Louth, Monaghan and Cavan), which requires thermal treatment capacity as part of its integrated waste management plan. The facility will divert waste from landfill in line with the EU Landfill Directive. Early data returns from Ireland's first compliance year (2010) indicate that landfills are failing to ensure adequate pre-treatment of waste as required by the EPA in order to meet the Directive targets. This highlights a pressing need for pre-treatment capacity, to which the Meath facility will contribute an important amount. And, by diverting waste from landfill and generating renewable energy, the facility will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the waste sector.
