India, the world's largest democracy in population terms, has experienced growth rates averaging 8.5 per cent during the last few years, facilitated by investment valued at €375bn under its eleventh five-year plan. Given the government policy to sustain this growth rate in future, the requirement for continued investment in the energy, transport, telecoms and urban infrastructure sectors will obviously be central to this economic policy. During the twelfth five-year plan from 2012 onwards, the Indian government and private sector will invest €750bn in infrastructure on a 50:50 basis. Development of this scale will create opportunities for international consulting engineers across a range of engineering sectors given the 'open door' policy of the Indian Government and the consulting sector. However, the delivery of key infrastructure projects for India's economic development will only succeed if the skill capacity of the consulting engineering sector is adequate, and the financial commitment for infrastructure projects is sufficient.
