Feet first: delivering a pedestrian-friendly river crossing

The previous river crossing in Carrick-on-Shannon, which carried the N4 over the River Shannon, comprised a six-span stone masonry arch (constructed in 1846) with an overall length between abutments of approximately 70m. The pedestrian linkage across the river was via two footways on the road bridge, each much narrower than the normal desirable minimum footway width of 2m.
