British pledge on military Airbus provides 10,000 aerospace jobs

Britain's aerospace industry will get a major boost from the MoD's commitment, announced this week, to order 25 new military transport aircraft from Airbus, at a cost of £3.5bn. The plan will create 10,000 new jobs in Britain, according to John Weston, chief executive of BAE Systems, which will build the wings for all the aircraft. But the benefits to the sector in the UK could be up to 10 times as high, as the MoD's decision is expected to spur order commitments from the other six European partner countries involved in the project. Total European orders could be up to 250 aircraft.
