The surprise interest rate cut last week means the Monetary Policy Committee has finally twigged that manufacturing is in trouble. That, so far as it goes, is a good sign. A pity, then, that it was only the imminent release of statistics showing the sector in actual, official, technical recession that finally got the MPC to do something about it.
