Trade secretary Stephen Byers' comments on the importance of the UK's manufacturing sector (Editor's leader, 26 January) suggest he must have a very short memory. Take the government's latest stealth tax on industry — the 'Climate Change Levy'. A recent survey by Ernst & Young said this tax would raise £95m in its first year from the already hard-pressed high energy usage UK manufacturing sector.
