As more surfacing, shape definition and manipulation tools are being incorporated into mainstream CAD products, the roles of the design engineer and the product designer are getting ever closer Industrial and product designers are not aliens, just different kinds of engineers who, in the main, are trained in an engineering discipline prior to completing their training as 'designers'. Consequently, just like FE analysts and manufacturing engineers they must (and usually do) have a grounding in popular/core CAD/CAM software like CATIA, NX (Unigraphics), PTC or SolidWorks.
